I visited with Ronnie out in Funky Town the other day. A friendly, curious fella without an ounce of the pretense or ego that could be present for someone that has lived the life he has thus far. He currently teaches music and is working on a solo album that im excited to hear when the time comes. People are just people but the guys got that thing and it's clear that he is on to something. Some of his past efforts have been with Neon Indian and Vega. You can hear some fragments of songs at the link below, my favorite of which is Sultan Flower.

Daughters Of San Jose

by Dylan 21. January 2012 20:44

I just returned from Costa Rica where i spent 5 days on a shoot there with my biggest client. After the shoot wrapped i headed to San Jose and stayed for 18 hours, focusing on the sex industry that is fueled largely by tourism and is also legal there. The following is some of what i saw and experienced. As someone who has often struggled with being a good man to women, selfish relationships and also as a father of of two young ladies, this experience meant a lot to me. I will continue on this series when i can, expanding to other areas of the problem and the solution as well.

Victor aka Viola, 18 year old worker who has been on the street for 4 years.

Sophia, 26 years old and the hardest of them all.

Street scenes.

Carol, a worker who is 4 months pregnant.

Jane Doe, a 26 year old worker in the sex industry who wished to remain nameless and faceless.

Sexism exists in each country only in another guise.

Worry.

Ashley, 20 year old worker and crack addict from Colombia.

Street scenes.

Sophia, 26 years old and the hardest of them all.

Street scenes.

This man was arrested for assaulting a prostitute.

Ashley, 20 year old worker and crack addict from Colombia.

Street scenes.

Many nightclubs in San Jose have hourly room rates in adjoining rooms.

Carol, a worker who is 4 months pregnant.

Maria, an ex-worker who no longer is able to make a living in the trade and relies on money from strangers.

Street scenes.

Sophia, 26 years old and the hardest of them all.

Empty rooms.

Rubbish.

Jane Doe, a 26 year old worker in the sex industry who wished to remain nameless and faceless.

Street scenes.

Victor aka Viola, 18 year old worker who has been on the street for 4 years.

Ashley, 20 year old worker and crack addict from Colombia.

Missing.

Outtake from recent shoot

Pretty dadgum happy to have been able to work with Sarah again recently and do something new and different. The images are burning a hole in my pocket and can't be released until the album drops but she released one on her music page last night and is allowing me to do the same here and on my blog. Looking forward to sharing final images we shot that day when the time is right, as well as hearing her new work. If you aren't familiar with what she has done so far, you better have a listen at the link below.

Angus G. Wynne III

Angus G. Wynne III

January 2012

If you have been around Dallas for a minute or two and are familiar with the music scene and the town's history and people, you have probably heard Angus' name. I was introduced by our mutual friend Neill Whitlock not too long ago and have visited with him twice for lunch and conversations over the past two weeks. We talked about a lot... our family histories which are mildly and geographically intertwined, riding on a chariot in Rome with Charlton Heston during the filming of Ben Hur, aversion therapy, Texas musical history, opinions about what really happened in '63 in Dealey Plaza, Bob Dylan's first show with an electric backing band which Angus had a hand in bringing to Texas, how the internet has changed business, sharing barbecue with Otis Redding, solutions to cat allergies, he and his family's involvement in the World's Fair and a few other things that i can't remember. Not bad for just getting acquainted. The guy has lived quite a bit and i found myself answering 'no' when asked if i was familiar with a subject or person more times that i usually do. More than all of the experiences, elbows rubbed and deeds done though, i like how the guy is quick to laugh, gave me his fill attention and took an interest in finding out about where i was coming from as well. All good and personable qualities. These days he is still running Wynne Entertainment and plugging away promoting, booking shows and keeping his ear to the music world. You can check out more of his history in film and the company that he runs at the links below. Enjoy.

"We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in:
machinery that gives abundance has left us in want.
Our knowledge has made us cynical,
our cleverness hard and unkind.
We think too much and feel too little:
More than machinery we need humanity;
More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness.
Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.
You the people have the power, the power to create machines but moreso the power to create happiness. You the people have the power to make life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure."

I think this is one of my favorite photographs i have taken this year. I have known Brandon since 2nd grade and struck up a friendship with him the moment we met. I remember we used to carry around a walkman with Metallica, Ozzy and Gn'R tapes on the playground. I guess we were just that cool. He and his family have a spread of land outside of the town i grew up in and i remember certain things about it like it was just a while ago. His pet raccoon, the pond with an oak tree and cabin next to it that looks like a postcard, his mom's smile and eyes, the first time i had a lemon drop, taking guns and army crawling through creek beds in the woods and that feeling of being young when everything kicked ass. I moved away at one point and then a few years later came back and we would kick it again from time to time. One time at school in the bathroom this kid was giving me hell and calling me Elvis. I wasn't doing too good at standing up to him and Brandon came in and got my back. He was always the toughest pacifist i knew. I remember always appreciating him for that and at the same time feeling ashamed for not being able to stand alone. The last time i saw him was around 1999. I wasn't doing too well back then but he still opened his home up to me and helped me out when a lot of people wouldn't have wanted to get involved in the mess that was me. Unmerited grace has been a common theme throughout my life. He also reached out to me last year at a time when i needed a friend and we have had a few small conversations online since but until yesterday hadn't been able to get together and catch up. Coolest reunion i have had with anyone in a while. We got to bring each other up to speed on things and talk about the ups and downs of the last 10 years. I can't imagine not seeing too many other people for that long and being able to fall right back into step with them. It's a lot like finding your wallet you thought you lost and feeling richer even though all you have is what you always had, if that makes any sense.

Breakfast With Cowboy
Dallas, Tx.
December 2011

I dropped off a disk from my last assignment for the year across the street at the Info Mart and then walked across the way to see what the fellas were up to. They have a camp underneath 35 that had just been flooded by last night's rains and was air drying. Cowboy and Jeff invited me for breakfast and they cooked kabobs on the grill. Not bad. Cowboy has been riding trains across America for about 40 years and told me a few stories. He reminded me of a character from a Steinbeck novel and most of his stories did too. One was about Lefty, a friend of his who lost his whole left arm by trying to hop a train that was going too fast. Thus, the name. He said you can figure out if a train is going too fast to board by looking at the wheels. Each wheel has three big bolts on it. If it is going slow enough to board then you should be able to count the three bolts. If you can't count three and see them distinct from each other then it's going too fast. I learned that and a few other things and then had to go. Sometimes i wish i could stay though.

The Taker

by Dylan 14. November 2011 07:48

And a Man sat alone, drenched deep in sadness. And all the animals drew near to him and said, "We do not like to see you so sad. Ask us for whatever you wish and you shall have it." The Man said, "I want to have good sight." The owl replied, "You shall have mine." The Man said, "I want to be strong." The bear said, "You shall be strong like me." Then the Man said, "I long to know the secrets of the earth." The serpent replied, "I will show them to you." And so it went with all the animals. And when the Man had all the gifts that they could give, he left. Then the owl said to the other animals, "Now the Man knows much, he'll be able to do many things. Suddenly I am afraid." The deer said, "The Man has all that he needs. Now his sadness will stop." But the owl replied, "No. I saw a hole in the Man, deep like a hunger he will never fill. It is what makes him sad and it is what makes him want. He will go on taking and taking, until one day the World will say, 'I am no more and I have nothing left to give.'"
