Breakfast With Cowboy
Dallas, Tx.
December 2011

I dropped off a disk from my last assignment for the year across the street at the Info Mart and then walked across the way to see what the fellas were up to. They have a camp underneath 35 that had just been flooded by last night's rains and was air drying. Cowboy and Jeff invited me for breakfast and they cooked kabobs on the grill. Not bad. Cowboy has been riding trains across America for about 40 years and told me a few stories. He reminded me of a character from a Steinbeck novel and most of his stories did too. One was about Lefty, a friend of his who lost his whole left arm by trying to hop a train that was going too fast. Thus, the name. He said you can figure out if a train is going too fast to board by looking at the wheels. Each wheel has three big bolts on it. If it is going slow enough to board then you should be able to count the three bolts. If you can't count three and see them distinct from each other then it's going too fast. I learned that and a few other things and then had to go. Sometimes i wish i could stay though.
